Prior to beginning this design sprint, we had already created a basic style guide, that we called the foundation. This foundation loosely defined our typography, colors, icons, spacing and information architecture. The foundation proved essential for guiding our work in a unified direction while allowing room for us to individually explore creative design solutions.

We're also building internal tools for asset management, file sharing and prototyping that we'll share in the coming months. In general, we try not to burden people with too much software, as each team has their own needs. Our community is so large and diverse it's incredibly important to have a team that helps us understand behaviours on our platform. In most cases, data scientists will work closely with researchers to help us learn more about our users. All of our designers are motivated to learn more about data and how to read it. The research team helps develop and iterate on features by capturing real user feedback, but it also takes on larger, long-term research projects that guide the overall product strategy.

With the recent launch of our newly designed typeface Airbnb Cereal, our team was able to experience the process firsthand—including brand marketing and product UI. From developing the type, UI testing, and product integration, here’s what we learned along the way. Aligning designers, developers, and maintainers around a component’s purpose is the key to creating a system that can be easily extended and governed. They have a function and personality, are defined by a set of properties, can co-exists with others and can evolve independently. A unified design language should not just be a set of static rules and individual atoms, but an evolving ecosystem.
Personalized Experience
A secondary button is implemented in a secondaryButton.jsx file. High-Quality Visuals
In this video, the creator installed thin timber strips vertically and horizontally, which adds dimension and frames out the fireplace. But you can achieve a similar effect by simply painting the wall your fireplace is on in a dark, moody color and making the mantel white. They can get you that lush look minus any maintenance or natural light requirements, but obviously faux plants can feel cheap and tacky. For a more realistic look, try tinkering with the shape of the leaves and stems. Bend out the branches, flatten the leaves, and manipulate them until you achieve a more natural look.
We needed to set the type—sizes, leading, spacing—across a product that’s been around for 10 years and has thousands of UI views. Being armed with a custom content generator made it much easier to test the font in realistic designs. While testing in UI, we focused on legibility at all sizes, balanced weights for hierarchy, and non-distracting texture—all qualities we believed would result in a functional typeface. To see if the typeface personality fit the UI, we had to design with it. Working with about 20 characters made this a challenging task because, if we accidentally used characters outside of our set, a design program (like Sketch) would switch the font entirely. Testing the same copy everywhere didn’t feel realistic enough, either.
Our ambition required us to rethink some of the ways we worked. Today marks the rollout of the most ambitious update to our Airbnb app — a new entirely mobile way to explore the hosts, homes, and neighborhoods of our community. 2- To add colors, you could paste the website address directly or link to a CSS file.
